The inauguration of the two new stretches of the Pune Metro — from Pimpri Chinchwad to Civil Court and from Vanaz to Ruby Hall Clinic — has boosted the ridership as over 20 lakh commuters have used the service within the city, helping the Metro authority to net a revenue of Rs 3 crore in August alone.
“The Pune Metro has helped improve the public transport service in the city. The PMPML and Pune Metro has also made feeder service available for the convenience of citizens,” said Shravan Hardikar, managing director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro), the governing body of the Pune Metro rail.
According to the Maha-Metro, a total of 20.40 lakh commuters used the service in August and an average 65,000 commuters used the service per day. The maximum ridership was 1.69 lakh on August 15. This has led to a revenue collection of Rs 3.07 crore per month, which is an average of Rs 9.78 lakh per day. In August, the maximum number of 2 lakh commuters were at the station of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, followed by Vanaz station which recorded a footfall of 1.53 lakh. It was also noticed that the maximum number of commuters bought ticket through electronic payment. The Pune Metro rail has also launched ‘Ek Pune card’ for daily commuters to avoid the hassle of buying tickets every time they commute.
Till July 31, the Pune Metro was operating from Pimpri Chinchwad to Phugewadi and Vanaz to Garware college. The stretch originating from Pimpri Chinchwad was extended to Civil Court, thereby reducing the commuting time between Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune city, while the one starting from Vanaz was extended till Ruby Hall Clinic.
The Pune Metro runs from 6am to 10pm. There is a discount of 30 percent for undergraduate students on all days and the same for everyone on weekends.
The first phase of the Pune Metro is expected to be made operational by year end by extending the stretches till Swargate and Ramwadi. a
