SILCHAR: Police detained 17 fake “qazis” (a person who solemnises Muslim marriages) in different operations in Hailakandi district of Assam on Wednesday, as the police continued their crackdown on child marriage.
A senior official of Lala police station said those 17 fake qazis detained have no official registration required for the job.
“It has been found that the detained men have no registration to solemnise Muslim marriages. Moreover, it’s suspected that they were involved in many cases of child marriages in the district,” the official said.
Altogether 11 of the detained persons have been identified as Fayez Uddin, Ajir Uddin Laskar, Mufti Abdul Hossain, Asadulla Laskar, Kaosar Ahmed, Abdul Jalil Laskar, Sharif Uddin Laskar, Nurul Haque Laskar, Abdul Salam Barbhuiya, Saidul Haque. The rest of the detained persons’ names were not available till the filing of this report.
It is learned that the police have seized 10 “kabul namas” from them.
An official at Hailakandi Sadar police station said the detained persons are being interrogated. Further action will be taken as required, the official said.
